Cancer Care in the UAE

It was a great opportunity for me to participate at the 5th Combined Gulf Cancer Conference last week. It gave me a deep inside about cancer care in the UAE and the Middle East - opportunities, challenges and achievements. I left with a lot of contacts and hope to be able to use them and contribute to the improvement of the care.

Cultural aspects, social pressure and fear are working against screening and early detection, the lack of accessibility to cure is still working against state of the art therapy, government policies are missing. Mental support throughout the cancer journey plays a key role in a wholistic cancer treatment, but it is not sufficiently available.

So a lot to do…

But on the good side: I’ve met very passionate, knowledgeable and powerful people who dedicate their full energy towards the improvement of care and wellbeing of people affected by cancer.

I was especially impressed talking to H.E Sawsan Jafar ,Chairperson Friends of Cancer Patients/UAE , to Dr. Suad Ben Amer, founder of Zahra Breast Cancer Association in KSA and to Dr. Nijhawan who is working in the field of palliative care in Abu Dhabi. Things are moving in the UAE, I felt, slower than we wish maybe - but to the right direction. Our motivation to intensify and improve our work as cancer coaches was boosted and we were reminded that every single contribution and personal engagment can contribute to positive change 🤞
